They are excellent products made by the best-funded AI companies on earth, and for many tasks they will be faster and smarter than us. This page is about the one dimension where we are structurally different — who owns the machines and whose courts can reach them — and we say plainly what each product does better than we do.

Competitor rows describe company ownership and jurisdiction, based on public terms and filings as of June 2026. ChatGPT, Copilot and Gemini are products of US-incorporated companies; the CLOUD Act (H.R.4943, 2018) applies to US providers wherever the data is stored. "Configurable"/"Commercial terms" rows reflect that paid business tiers of these products offer training opt-outs — check the tier you are actually on. Spot an error in this table? What it does better than us: frontier model capability, the largest plugin and app ecosystem, voice mode, and a free tier. If raw capability on non-confidential work is the only criterion, buy ChatGPT.
The structural difference: OpenAI is a US company; whatever tier you pay for and wherever your data is stored, it remains within reach of US legal process under the CLOUD Act. For a UK professional handling patient, client or employee data, that fact belongs in your DPIA — and "we selected the UK data residency option" does not remove it.
What it does better than us: deep integration with Word, Outlook, Excel and Teams — AI inside the documents you already have open. If your organisation lives in Microsoft 365 and your IG lead has signed off the jurisdiction question, Copilot is the convenient choice.
The structural difference: in June 2025, Microsoft France's director of public and legal affairs told a French Senate inquiry, under oath, that he could not guarantee European data would never be handed to US authorities without European consent — while noting it had never happened. We wrote about exactly what that testimony does and does not mean. It is the clearest public statement that residency commitments do not move jurisdiction.
What it does better than us: integration with Google Workspace, very long context windows, and strong multimodal features. Same logic as Copilot: if you live in Workspace and the jurisdiction question is answered in your paperwork, it is a capable product.
The structural difference: Google is a US company; Gemini runs on Google-owned infrastructure. The CLOUD Act analysis is identical to the other two — the postcode of the data centre is not the variable that matters.
Not sure how your current stack scores? Our two-minute CLOUD Act exposure checker walks you through seven questions — no email address, no tracking, and a result you can file with your DPIA.

Hush is a small UK company. Our models run on NVIDIA hardware we own in England — which is precisely why we can make the jurisdiction claims above, and also why we cap free pilots at five at a time. We have no Word plug-in, no voice assistant in your earbuds, and no free tier. Conversation history is stored encrypted on our hardware until you delete it — we do not pretend otherwise — and it is never used for training. If the comparison above matters to your organisation, that trade is the entire product.
